Familial Polyposis

Abstract
Familial playposis is a rare disease and characterized by multiple, variable sized adenomatous polyps in the entire colon and rectum. It is transmitted as a single dominant pleiotropic gene with variable penetrance.
A case of familial polyposis is presented with a brief review of literature. Melena, diarrhea and intermittent abdominal pain are common symptoms. It usually occurs in the second decade.
Familial polyposis is a precancerous lesion and its diagnosis can be made by the histological confirmation of adenomatous polyps and precise family history. Successful treatment depends on the early diagnosis, appronriate surgical operation and follow-up care. Thirty three-year old Korean male had a diffuse polyposis in the colon and upper rection with focal malignant evidence. His sister has polyposis coli. A total colectomy and iieorectal anastomosis was performed.
